Signs of Spring

OK, the snow hasn’t exactly started to melt.  But the days are getting longer and the sun is shining more brightly.

And the redpolls arrived in the garden today!

redpoll1

“Hey, this feeder looks familiar.”

redpoll4

“Well, look at that! Filled with my favorite – nyger seed.”

redpoll3

“Just like the gardeners, we have to ‘weed out’ the seeds we don’t want – like this canary seed, or whatever it is. Yuck!”

  1. Very funny Hank! Thanks for the laugh! I love the way your background colors mirror the head of your redpoll. Beautiful! Yes the days are lasting longer!!! ;>))

  4. Yesterday, we got a fresh load of snow... Yes, here in the 'low lands near the sea', we had our share of snow this winter too.
But yes, days are getting longer... Today it was six o'clock before it started getting darker ;-).
And the blackbirds were fighting, and the blue tits couldn't stand their companions anymore. Sure sign that winter is coming to an end!

  5. Haven't seen the redpolls yet. They are the "big pigs" at my feeders, along with pine siskins and chase all the other little birdies off. The snow is melting...dare I hope for an early spring?

  6. What a cutie! I'm amazed that you were able to capture that precise moment when he rejected a tiny seed. Glad to hear spring is coming even where you are, Hank. :)

  8. Hello Hank, and yes, we are ready as are the birds... currently the nuthatch are attempting to take over the new bluebird house, my latest dilemma. :)

  9. I love the dear little redpoles -- it would be a toss up between them and the chickadees for favourite garden bird in the winter. :) Love their little red berets.

  12. I was able to work in the garden the last couple of days, and the birds were singing and courting each other already! Definitely a sign of spring!

  15. I'm fascinated by the variety of gardens from around the world. I found your site via blotanical. You might be just about the most northern gardener on the site. Scrolling through your blog I am amazed at the beautiful garden you are able to grow.

How many months is your growing season?
