Red Amaryllis

The amaryllis just has to be among the most awesome flower blossoms!

The form, the sweeping lines, not to mention the size of the blooms, are all quite spectacular.  What I like about this one, that just bloomed within the past few days, is the color.  The deep red is amazing.  And when the sun shone through the back of it this morning … well, it was a serious photo op.

I published a post a while ago about photographing red flowers, and the difficulty the sensors in digital cameras have with rendering the color red so that it is what we see.  Sometimes it’s necessary to adjust the color in photoshop or some other photo editing software.  However, in this photo it wasn’t necessary.  This is straight off the camera, and only resized for web display.

  2. Dear Hank, This is a magnificent photograph but then you always reward us with such high standards and this, most certainly, is without exception. The red has such a depth of colour that I believe that I can almost touch it, and every single aspect of this flower is captured here.

  3. Fantastic shot, Hank! Even when I adjust the reds in photo edit mode, I can't seem to manage to get what I see in real life -- but this Amaryllis looks so honest, with those real red tones and that lovely warm undertone of orange. Not a hint of magenta in sight. :)

  4. Wonderful shot Hank with the sun filtering in behind it. I have fallen in love with amaryllis this winter. Who doesn't love the big blooms.

  5. Yes, amaryllis have wonderful blooms and lift the spirits in the winter! I had a red one very much like yours. You are right about the colors when photographing under different lighting situations...it's always a challenge to get it right but the natural light here looks great!

  6. I'm really regretting not forcing an amaryllis this year. And pics like that don't help, Hank! We just got a bunch of snow a couple of days ago when I finally thought spring was in the air. How are you for snow these days?

  8. @Christine, we're cautiously optimistic that spring is on its way. The snow is going, and none in the forecast so far. But, March isn't over yet.
